The cybercriminals have approached these employees via text messages and encrypted messaging platforms such as Telegram.
One message sent to a T-Mobile employee read, "I got your number from the T-Mo employee directory. I'm looking to pay someone up to $300 per SIM swap done. If you're interested, reply and we can talk."
SIM swap attacks involve a cybercriminal persuading a wireless carrier to redirect a customer's phone service to the attacker’s device. This can result in identity theft, loss of sensitive information, and financial fraud. Unfortunately, the frequency of SIM swap attacks is increasing.
The FBI has noted a significant rise in SIM swap attacks. Between January 2018 and December 2020, the agency received 320 complaints related to SIM swapping, with losses totaling $12 million. In 2021, complaints surged to 1,611, with victims losing over $68 million. By 2022, the number of complaints exceeded 2,000, with nearly $73 million in losses.
How Hackers Use SIM Swaps to Steal
Hackers use SIM swaps as a means to gain access to the victim’s phone number, which serves as a gateway to various personal and financial accounts. The process begins with the attacker gathering personal information about the victim, often through phishing, social engineering, or purchasing data from the dark web. With this information in hand, the hacker contacts the victim's mobile carrier, impersonating the victim and requesting a SIM card replacement.
Once the mobile carrier approves the request, the victim’s phone number is transferred to a new SIM card that the hacker controls. This enables the hacker to receive all calls and text messages intended for the victim, including two-factor authentication (2FA) codes sent by banks and other services.
With control over the victim’s phone number, hackers can reset passwords on various accounts by requesting password recovery via SMS. They can gain access to email accounts, social media profiles, and online banking accounts. This often leads to the theft of funds, unauthorized transactions, and complete identity theft. The hacker can empty bank accounts, conduct fraudulent transactions, and lock the victim out of their own accounts.
Protecting Yourself from SIM Swap Attacks
Given the increasing prevalence of SIM swap attacks, it is crucial to take proactive measures to protect oneself:
